WARM WISHES FROM THE HEARTLAND ARE STILL NEEDED BY THE TROOPS

For the first time in five years the number of Nebraska National Guard members serving in Iraq is nearly zero. The Guard says only two Nebraska Airmen are serving in Iraq on individual deployments. This is not to say that more won’t be deployed in the future, but for now, especially during the holidays, this is a wonderful blessing.

While this is good news it does not mean that we can now forget about our men and women in harm’s way. There are still Nebraskans serving in the regular military in Iraq and about 50 Nebraska National Guard Members continue serving in Afghanistan. We want to keep all of them in our thoughts and prayers as well as all the brave Americans who are serving their country no matter what state they call home.

HOMETOWNS TO HEROES
The troops and their families need to know those of us back home support them which is why I am again using my Senate website to connect Nebraskans with U.S. troops abroad in a project we call “Hometowns to Heroes”.

“Hometowns to Heroes” gives Nebraskans an opportunity to share holiday greetings with members of the military serving overseas.  The web page allows constituents to post an online message, photo or video that will remind service members that they are loved, appreciated and remembered.

Our troops make a courageous effort year round to ensure Americans continue to enjoy the liberties given to them so long ago. This is a simple and meaningful way for Nebraskans to show they care for our heroes away from home during the holidays.

HOW TO SEND A GREETING
The theme of this year’s project is “Warm Wishes from the Heartland.”  To participate, please visit http://bennelson.senate.gov/h2hproject2008. Here you may email your submission in text or image (JPEG) format.  Physical submissions on standard sized paper are also accepted and can be mailed to my office at 720 Hart Building, Washington, DC 20510.

Schools are especially encouraged to promote this project through students and teachers, and classroom projects are welcome.  Children can incorporate the “Warm Wishes” theme in their artwork.

You may contribute and view postings through January 9, 2009.

The site gives our members of the armed forces serving overseas a one-click stop on the Internet to see a number of messages and pictures from family, friends and well-wishers at home.

TROOPS ARE NOT FORGOTTEN
Your expression of support and pride for someone serving their country many miles from home will go a long ways toward letting them know they are not forgotten by their fellow Americans especially during the time of year when they are unable to get together with their families.
