October 20, 2011 – Today, Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson issued this statement after voting against moving ahead with the Teachers and First Responders Work Act. The Senate voted 50-50, failing to achieve the 60 votes needed to move ahead with the bill.
“I opposed this measure because it’s another effort to raise taxes for new government spending and, in this case, it represents another state budget bailout bill with little guarantee that it won't merely replace funds that states could have otherwise invested in education,” said Senator Nelson.
“States have used similar additional federal funds in the past to replace state funds that otherwise could have gone to education—using the state funds for other spending items.
“Nebraskans are tired of bail outs.
"Finally, unlike previous funds for state government, this new spending appeared to have little support from Nebraska state and local officials."
