NELSON STATEMENT ON DEATH OF LIBYAN DICTATOR QADDAFI

October 20, 2011 – Today, Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued this statement in response to reports that Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi had been killed:

“For more than four decades, a tyrant – Muammar Qaddafi – has ruled and oppressed the Libyan people by murdering those opposed to his regime and denying them freedom.

“Qaddafi’s death is welcome news for them, and marks another major victory in the war against terrorism. The world is safer without Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki and Muammar Qaddafi, who were directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people, including Americans.

“Qaddafi terrorized his own people and the world. Former Qaddafi officials have contended that Qaddafi himself ordered the bombing of Pan Am 103, which killed 270 people, including 189 Americans, and warned that Qaddafi would attempt attacks on the U.S., its allies and partners for the Libya intervention this spring.

“In recent months, acting under a United Nations mandate and with international support, the U.S., partners and allies enforced an arms embargo, established a no fly zone and worked to protect Libyan people by crippling Qaddafi’s power and attacks.

“While the U.S. didn’t go alone or go into Libya with boots on the ground, we and our allies provided the support that enabled the Libyan people to rid the world of a dangerous terrorist.

“The Libyan people have a long road ahead of them, but now they can shape a new future.”
