NELSON SUPPORTS FUNDING FOR TROOPS IN IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN

The United States Senate last night approved a measure to provide $70 billion in emergency funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The amendment was added to the FY08 Omnibus appropriations bill.

Nebraska's Senator Ben Nelson, a member of the Armed Services and Appropriations Committees, joined 69 of his colleagues in supporting the amendment.  Nelson issued the following statement:

"It is critically important that we provide the troops in the field with the equipment and resources they need to do their jobs.  The Administration had initially requested nearly $190 billion in emergency, off-budget funding for Iraq and Afghanistan.  I would have preferred to consider a complete package – or even better to have worked within the regular budget process.  But it is crucial that we pass at least part of the funding now.  I expect we will have a rigorous and necessary debate in 2008 about the rest of this package and our future mission in Iraq."
