Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson today met with President Bush’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Judge Samuel Alito and released the following statement:
“I met with Judge Alito this morning for about forty minutes. We had a lengthy discussion on various issues, the role of the court, and his philosophy on judicial activism. It was a good meeting and I came away from it with a better knowledge and understanding of Judge Alito and his judicial philosophy.
“The American people deserve a fair and thorough confirmation process. Judge Alito’s meetings with members of the Senate are the beginning, not the end of this important process. It is my view that he is off to a good start. I look forward to learning even more about Judge Alito as the confirmation process unfolds. It would be unfair to prejudge the nominee, one way or the other, before he has had a fair hearing before the Judiciary Committee and had a chance to tell his story to the American people.”
