NELSON DELIVERS NEBRASKA QUILTS TO WOUNDED TROOPS

Nebraska’s Senator and Mrs. Ben Nelson spent the lunch hour today at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC distributing home made quilts from Nebraska to military members wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Nelsons distributed 5 of 9 quilts that were provided and quilted by Amy Medcalf and the Chadron, Nebraska Quilting Troop, a group comprised of community members from Chadron and surrounding areas which wanted to show its appreciation for injured members of the armed services. The Nelsons will distribute the remaining 4 quilts at a later date.

“We’ve been trying to show our military personnel that we appreciate what they’re doing to keep our country free,” said Ms. Medcalf. “There are nine to fifteen of us working on the quilts. Three or four sew while the rest tie and cut the blocks.”

“I want to thank the Chadron Quilting Troop for caring enough to make these beautiful quilts that we handed out today,” said Nelson. “The brave young Americans who have been injured in the service of their country were truly moved by the generosity and thoughtfulness of the people of Chadron. Diane and I were honored to be a part of the program.”
