Today, the United States Senate voted 46-53 to defeat the amnesty-based immigration bill (S 1639). Nebraska's Senator Ben Nelson voted against the cloture motion, which required 60 votes to pass. Nelson issued the following statement:
"Today's vote, coming after dozens of amendments and weeks of debate, reflected the severity of the shortcomings and fundamental flaws of this immigration proposal. Today's vote was more than a procedural vote; it was a vote on the substance of the bill. I voted against this bill because it puts amnesty first and included minimal border security and legal immigration reform provisions only as enticements to secure some votes in favor if the amnesty provisions."
