˜ Ben Nelson
Nebraska's Senator Ben Nelson issued this statement today after the Senate passed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (HR 1256), which grants the FDA authority to regulate tobacco products:
"I am pleased to support this legislation which aims to snuff out teen tobacco use and reduce smoking across the country.
"Nearly 20% of Nebraska high school students smoke and 7,200 additional Nebraskans under 18 try cigarettes each year. The toll of a lifetime of smoking can lead to chronic health problems and growing medical bills. In Nebraska alone, $537 million is spent each year on health care costs directly caused by tobacco. Cutting tobacco use is a win-win. It will save lives and it will save money."
The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act is supported by the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids in addition to more than 1,000 public health, faith, and other organizations across the country.
