February 5, 2010 – Today, Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson welcomed an announcement by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that Nebraska will receive more than $1 million to support public health efforts across the state. The funds are made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
“By supporting tobacco cessation and helping children make healthy choices, the stimulus funds announced today will help Nebraskans to lead healthier lives,” said Senator Nelson.
The money supports several components in HHS’ comprehensive prevention and wellness initiative, Communities Putting Prevention to Work, which is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Nebraska will receive $534,756 under the State and Territory Awards for Tobacco Cessation through Quitlines and Media program, which will support efforts to increase tobacco cessation through quit-lines and media campaigns. Additionally, Nebraska will receive $478,336 under the State and Territory Base Awards for Policy and Environmental Change program, which will focus on efforts to help communities and schools support healthy choices through a variety of methods including using media to support healthy food and beverage choices and increased physical activity, and increasing access to healthy choices and safe places to be active.
The funds were part of more than $119 million in funding -- provided to 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and six Pacific territories – announced today by HHS.
Senator Nelson played a key role in the passage of the $787 billion stimulus bill. He worked with a bipartisan group of nearly 20 Senators to better focus The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act on tax cuts for the middle class and job creation for millions of Americans. Senator Nelson led the group through the initial bill line by line, dollar by dollar, to reduce spending and cut out $108 billion of inefficient or less-stimulative spending. The bipartisan group helped the improved bill win congressional approval. President Obama signed it into law February 17, 2009.
