NELSON: $33.5 MILLION IN STIMULUS FUNDS AND OVER 200 NEW NEBRASKA JOBS FOR CLEAN TECHNOLOGY

January 8, 2010 – Today, Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson welcomed an announcement by the White House that Nebraska will receive more than $33.5 million in tax credits to help construct two clean energy manufacturing projects in the state resulting in over 200 new Nebraska jobs.   The Recovery Act Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credits are part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“This is great news that will help two pioneering businesses grow in our state,” said Senator Nelson.  “The stimulus bill is about creating jobs and today’s announcement that over 200 new jobs are coming to Nebraska is welcome news in these tough economic times.  Together with the new biofuels facility, the wind turbine facility will bring good paying manufacturing jobs to the state and create a foundation for future growth in this expanding industry.”

TPI Composites, Inc. will be using a $5,135,241 tax credit to build a new manufacturing facility in Grand Island to produce next generation wind turbine blades.  TPI says the facility will create over 200 new jobs and will have a capacity equivalent to supplying 265 turbines rated at 2.5 MW for a total electrical output of 663 MW.  TPI's composite materials are used to make lighter and stronger wind turbine blades and lighter and stronger (and more fuel efficient) vehicles.  The blades are made by combining reinforcing fibers from glass or carbon, resin, foam, and balsa wood.  Senator Nelson has been a long-time supporter of TPI’s efforts to bring a new clean technology manufacturing facility into the state of Nebraska.

Novozymes in Blair will be receiving $28,401,000 in tax credits to install equipment at a new manufacturing facility to produce enzymes used in manufacturing cellulosic ethanol from corn stover (leaves and stalks of the corn) by the biochemical platform (biomass pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation, distillation).  These biocatalysts will aid the production of biofuels as a renewable energy source.

“We believe our selection for this tax credit is a reflection of the tremendous potential of advanced biofuels to create green jobs and contribute to meaningful reduction of greenhouse gases in the near-term,” said Adam Monroe, President of Novozymes North America.  “Novozymes applauds the continued support of the Obama administration and the leadership of Senator Ben Nelson to further the development of sustainable technologies like advanced biofuels.”

Senator Nelson played a key role in the passage of the $787 billion stimulus bill. He worked with a bipartisan group of nearly 20 Senators to better focus The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act on tax cuts for the middle class and job creation for millions of Americans. Senator Nelson led the group through the initial bill line by line, dollar by dollar, to reduce spending and cut out $108 billion of inefficient or less-stimulative spending. The bipartisan group helped the improved bill win congressional approval. President Obama signed it into law February 17, 2009.
