Senator Ben Nelson discusses the future of agriculture in Nebraska.
The senator met with local agriculture leaders to get their input on the new food security bill.
Nelson says it's vital to keep a safety net for agriculture, even in the midst of congressional budget cuts.
He says Western Nebraskans want support for ag research, as well as crop insurance in the event of natural disasters.
Nelson compares food security to energy production, and says we don't want to end up relying on foreign sources for food like we do for oil.
"We don't want to be dependent totally for our food", Nelson adds. "Therefore we need to have a strong American agriculture, and we'll be working on programs trying to keep it strong, but to stay within a budget to do so."
The Food Security Bill, or Farm Bill, is passed every few years by Congress.
