Sen. Ben Nelson said he had received assurance from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that the safety of Nebraska's two nuclear power plants along the Missouri River was being taken into consideration as the corps manages reservoir releases upstream.
Gen. John McMahon, who oversees management of the Missouri River Basin for the corps, assured Nelson in a letter it would conduct a full-scale assessment of this year's floods to make any needed adjustments in its future planning.
"Looking ahead," Nelson said during a Wednesday teleconference, "the corps must put the safety of these nuclear power plants at the forefront of how it manages the Missouri River Basin and future flooding events."
McMahon assured Nelson in his letter that the corps has worked closely with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Nebraska Public Power District and Omaha Public Power District during the current flooding challenge.
"The corps has not identified any significant public safety or infrastructure issues with the Fort Calhoun or Cooper nuclear power plants that would necessitate us to modify our current (water) release schedule," McMahon wrote the senator.
