OMAHA, Neb. -- Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson said he viewed photographs of Osama bin Laden’s body and confirmed that bin Laden is dead.
Nelson was shown the photographs at CIA headquarters in Langley, Va., on Tuesday.
“I can confirm: Yes, we got him,” Senator Nelson said during a conference call with reporters. “I viewed several photographs, and they left no question that it was Osama bin Laden. I was able to make a positive identification.”
The senator also announced he and other members of the Senate Armed Services Committee will travel to Afghanistan and Pakistan this summer.
Nelson said he plans to meet with service members and military leaders in Afghanistan to assess the U.S. mission going forward.
In Pakistan, Nelson said he’ll meet with top military leaders and government officials.
“Obviously, we would like to speak with them about how bin Laden was able to take refuge about 30 miles from Islamabad and be hiding in plain sight,” Nelson said.
The trip also will explore the future of the relationship between the U.S. and Pakistan.
“The death of bin Laden, as I’ve said before, raises a number of questions we don’t have answers to yet. I’m eager to move ahead and get them answered,” Nelson said.
